Takahe Spurs New Children's Short Story Competition

The plight of the takahe, an endangered native species, is coming under the spotlight as a topic for budding unpublished authors.

The children's short story competition is a partnership between Mitre 10 and Random House and builds on the success of the Mitre 10 Takahe Rescue, a three-year sponsorship of the DOC Takahe breeding program which based at Burwood Bush near Te Anau.

Foundation to Support Zoo Conservation Mission

The New Zealand National Parks and Conservation Foundation (NZNPCF) has thrown its support behind a mission to save the world's rarest duck. Early next month Auckland Zoo will provide vital veterinary skills for the return of the Campbell Island teal to its sub-antarctic home on Campbell Island, nearly 700km south of Bluff.

 This year the Foundation is hosting its annual Conservation Week black-tie event at Villa Maria Estate in Auckland.

Lawyer rewarded for conservation work

Long-time servant of conservation values, Dunedin lawyer Jim Guthrie was recognised for his contribution at the annual conservation week gathering at Conservation House in Dunedin last night.

Director-general of Conservation Hugh Logan was in town to present Mr Guthrie with a painting in gratitude for his work, which stretched to chairing the New Zealand Conservation Authority and helping to establish national parks.

Dr Tim Blackburn - A colourful retort about New Zealand's endemic species

A New Zealand Herald article written by Pamela Wade extolled the benefits of bringing more exotic species into New Zealand to liven up our gardens and to improve the array of colours and vocal tones of our native birds.

Luckily, visiting lecturer Dr Tim Blackburn and researcher Phill Cassey from Birmingham University pooled resources and wrote this very apt reply.

The Foundation has since established a very positive relationship with Dr Tim Blackburn - he has given permission for the unabridged version of his article on our website.

Little Barrier Trip - March 2006

Jane Arnott, Executive Director, hosted the exclusive annual trip to Little Barrier - a sanctuary north of Auckland which is home to some of the most endangered species in New Zealand.

Kathmandu sponsors lizard conservation

This summer, the Department of Conservation, sponsored by Kathmandu, has uncovered new habitats of rare New Zealand alpine geckos, helping to unravel the mysteries of these elusive and unique New Zealand species. The field team, led by lizard specialist Dr. Mandy Tocher, have been running the survey programme with the aid of a lizard-sniffing border terrier, Putiputi rapua, in the South Island's remote alpine areas.

Gone Forever

Susan Buckland, an award wining journalist came along to the Warbirds Over Wanaka function at the home of Trustee Prue Wallis. On learning about the Foundation and the plight of our wildlife, Susan was keen to offer her support. Later in the year we introduced Susan to Dr Tim Blackburn a reader in Macroecology in the School of Biological Sciences at Birmingham University. Susan's interview appeared in the Listener late March 2005.

Titled 'GONE FOREVER' the introduction reads:

This event raised over $25,000 for Island restoration in the Haurkai Gulf.Over 235 people attended some travelling from Australia, others from the South Island.

Kokako transfer to Pukaha, Mt Bruce

More kokako for Pukaha

The wild kokako population in the Pukaha Mount Bruce forest has almost doubled and become more genetically diverse with the arrival of eight of these rare songbirds from the Mapara Wildlife Reserve in the Waikato over the past two weeks.

Launch of Christchurch Head Office - March 2005

The Foundation launched its new head office in Christchurch. This was an informal function held at the home and office of Jane Arnott. Several sponsors attended including Kathmandu, Fulton Hogan, Gibson Rusden and Mitre 10. Potential new sponsors who attended are now being followed up!!

It was great to see fund recipients Alison Ross, Quail Island and Nick Ledgard Ashley River Wrybill Protection also in attendance.

Visits to Hauraki Gulf Marine Park - Jan 2005

Islands in the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park were a focus for the Foundation over January 2005. Two couples who had successfully bid for trips to Little Barrier at the 5 August 2004 Conservation Week function took advantage of the fine weather and had fabulous days.

Possum Debate and Wilderness Auction Wellington, 5 August, Conservation Week

This inaugural event represented a milestone for the Foundation. For the first time during Conservation Week the corporate and business community had an opportunity to participate, along with their clients, in Conservation Week. The Foundnation as host and orchestrator was thrilled to witness hundreds of people from across the country assemble for a night of merriment and possum discourse.

Launch of the Dawn Chorus Auckland 19 March 2004

The Dawn Chorus was launched at Old Government House on 19 March 2004. Hon Chris Carter, Minister of Conservation unveiled the vibrantly branded banner and presented framed certificates to all inaugural sponsors amidst a gathering of 50.

On 26 April 2006 the New Zealand National Parks and Conservation Foundation unveiled its Laying Down the Gauntlet campaign at the offices of Bell Gully in Auckland.
