Transpower Grants open for 2006/7Transpower, New Zealand's national electricity grid owner and operator have announced the 6th consecutive conservation grants round are now open for applications. The New Zealand National Parks and Conservation Foundation manage the Transpower Grants. The Foundation operates as the strategic partner to the Department of Conservation in conservation fundraising and works alongside a number of major corporates and listed companies to ensure the conservation estate is well represented and sponsorships are effectively managed. Transpower Grants are open to community groups, specifically those that are run as charitable trusts or have a governance structure; individuals at tertiary institutions who have an approved conservation research project and other agencies involved in protecting and restoring the conservation estate are able to apply. To date over 35 projects have been funded and over $350,000 has been donated to conservation causes and projects by Transpower. Projects that have previously been successful in winning a Transpower Grant include disease risk screening of endangered birds, a species translocation, community based riverbank stabilisation and planting, interpretation panels at a scenic reserve and estuary and a species research project.
